Can Dogs Eat Wild Rice?

Can Dogs Eat Wild Rice?

Yes, dogs can eat cooked wild rice in moderation.

Wild rice is also known as manoomin, Indian rice, Canada rice, and water oats. Despite its name, wild rice is actually made up of edible seeds from aquatic grass of the genus Zizania. This whole grain is said to contain more fiber and less calories, fat, and carbohydrates than white or brown rice.

Similar to regular rice, dogs can benefit from eating wild rice due to the protein, amino acids, and fiber found in it. From this grain, he can derive energy, have better bowel movement, and enhance bone health.

How to feed wild rice to your dog: Consult with your veterinarian before adding wild rice to your canine pet’s diet. Only let your dog try it after you get his vet’s approval. Limit the amount depending on his size, age, and activity levels.

Rinse and drain wild rice before boiling it in water or unseasoned broth. You can soak the grains beforehand to decrease the cooking time. Never add condiments such as salt, butter, herbs, and spices to increase the flavour of the wild rice. Drain the liquid and serve it when cooled.

Here are three ideas for wild rice treats your dog will love:

  1. Try this wild rice recipe with shredded chicken.
  2. Top wild rice with your canine’s preferred meat and veggie.
  3. Your pooch will enjoy these tasty treats made using blueberries and two kinds of rice.

In summary: Wild rice can be given to your canine as long as it is cooked without flavourings. Your pooch may love its firm texture and nutty, earthy taste. Aside from wild rice, learn which human foods you can safely give under our “can dogs eat” blog category.
