No, dogs should not eat ketchup.

Ketchup is a popular condiment with a sweet and sour flavour. Tomato ketchup, in particular, contains tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, seasonings, and spices. Depending on the ketchup recipe, its spices may include onion, garlic, mustard, celery, cinnamon, or ginger. Other ketchup varieties make use of banana and curry as its primary ingredient. Some people enjoy eating hot dogs, burgers, and fries slathered with ketchup.

Technically speaking, dogs can eat plainly cooked tomatoes, but not when they’re mixed with other potentially harmful ingredients. Onions and garlic are highly toxic to dogs. Meanwhile, cinnamon and mustard are also not recommended. Because of the risks involved in feeding ketchup to dogs, it is best not to let your pet try it.  

What to do if your dog accidentally eats ketchup: A tiny lick of ketchup should not harm your canine. However, if he ingested a substantial amount in one sitting, contact your veterinarian immediately. Review the ingredients listed on the nutrition facts label. Keep an eye on your pet and observe him for any unusual symptoms. At the same time, inform your vet of all your findings. 

Note that ketchup is different from tomato sauce. The latter can an ingredient for pasta, pizza, and meat dishes. When prepared plainly, dog can eat it in small amounts.

In summary: Ketchup does not provide your dog with the vital nutrients he needs to flourish on a daily basis. As such, it is highly advisable for dog parents to avoid integrating this condiment in their pets’ diets.
