Can Dogs Eat White Bread?

Can Dogs Eat White Bread?

Yes, dogs can eat plain white bread in moderation.

White bread is produced using wheat flour. The bread is lighter in colour because the flour’s bran and germ layers have been stripped away. This process makes it possible for white bread to last longer than other bread types. Depending on the recipe, its ingredients may include butter, salt, eggs, olive oil, milk, and baker’s yeast.

A type of grain, white bread can be eaten by dogs in limited amounts with some caveats. It should not be slathered with sweet fruit jams or contain meats unsafe for dogs. In addition, it is not advisable to let your dog eat white bread as part of his regular diet. This is because the baked food provides little to no nutritional value for him.

How to feed white bread to your dog: Limit his white bread intake to 10% of his total daily calories since it is considered a treat. When giving it for the first time, let him try a small portion of plain white bread. Slightly warm or toast it, or serve it at room temperature.

Always check with your veterinarian before serving your dog white bread. Though rare, some dogs may have wheat allergies or intolerances. This may manifest as itchy or flaky skin, hair loss, bumps, chronic ear infection, and obsessive licking or chewing of his feet.

Some dog owners suggest hiding medicine in a piece of white bread. Others offer the bread to pooches suffering from constipation or bloating. In both cases, it’s best to get your veterinarian’s approval before trying these home remedies. Too much white bread may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even weight gain.

In summary: Though a few bites of plain white bread can be given to your canine pet, it’s highly recommended to stick to more nutritious treats. Offer him dog-safe fruits and vegetables found on this comprehensive list, or browse through our “can dogs eat” category to discover better options.
