Can Dogs Eat Turkey Bones?

Can Dogs Eat Turkey Bones?

Though plainly cooked turkey meat is safe for dogs to eat, its bones are another matter. Similar to chicken bones, turkey bones may cause various complications when consumed by your canine pet. Turkey bones are known for being thin and chewy, so they can easily shatter into small, sharp pieces whether they’re raw or cooked. These bones can easily injure your dog’s mouth, tongue, esophagus, and stomach. Additionally, your dog can accidentally choke on the bone fragments, get intestinal blockages, or experience internal bleeding.

Aside from the actual bones causing harm, the leftover meat and fat that’s stuck to the bones may have been seasoned with ingredients that are poisonous for dogs. These include but are not limited to salt, garlic, onion, and lemon. Additionally, the fat trimmings may cause pancreatitis.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats turkey bones: Observe your dog for any signs of discomfort. Signs of choking include distress, coughing, salivation, gagging or retching, pawing at the mouth, blue mucous membranes, and rubbing his face against the ground.

Moreover, try to determine how much turkey bones he consumed. If he ate cooked turkey bones, find out which ingredients were used to prepare the dish. Contact your veterinarian immediately to report your findings.

In summary: Turkey bones may be an excellent source of calcium and phosphorus, but they are not good for dogs to consume because of the numerous health risks involved. Instead of giving him bones, choose other human foods that he can safely consume such as vegetables and fruits.
