Can Dogs Eat Scallops?

Can Dogs Eat Scallops?

Yes, dogs can eat plainly cooked scallops.

A member of the pectinidae family, scallops belong to species of mollusks found in the ocean. They can live in shallow to deep waters, either choosing to move freely or attach to stationary objects. Encased in fan-shaped, symmetrical, hinged shells, the tender scallop meat is eaten by seafood lovers worldwide.

However, it is not just humans that can enjoy scallops—even your pet dog can safely eat it! As long as your pooch isn’t allergic to seafood and does not have any illnesses that can be aggravated by it, you can treat him to plainly cooked scallops once in a while.

How to feed scallops to your dog: Always get your veterinarian’s consent before letting your dog try something new. Never serve him raw scallops, which may contain harmful parasites and bacteria that can cause poisoning.

When cooking scallops for your pooch, you can try different cooking methods: steam, boil, bake, or grill. No matter what your preferred cooking style is, it’s important not to add butter, salt, and garlic or onion powder. Play it safe by leaving the scallops unseasoned. Let it cool, then slice it into bite-sized pieces.

In addition, do not give your dog scallop shells as they may break and cause dental and gastrointestinal injury. When accidentally consumed, they may also cause airway or stomach blockage.

In summary: Though more on the pricey side, scallops are a good seafood choice that you can give your dog occasionally. He can benefit from the protein, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients found in them. But aside from scallops, you may want to let him try other seafood or meat options.
