Can Dogs Eat Instant Oatmeal?

Can Dogs Eat Instant Oatmeal?

Typically eaten during breakfast, oatmeal is a hot porridge-like dish. Compared to other forms of oats, instant oatmeal is thinner and has a shorter cooking time. As such, many people opt to buy and eat it. The soluble fiber found in instant oatmeal is said to help lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels.

Though plain, cooked oats may be enjoyed by dogs, some sources state that dog owners should steer clear of instant oatmeal. Aside from being heavily processed, sugar, artificial flavours, and preservatives are usually found in it. Some even contain toxic ingredients for dogs such as chocolate, nuts, raisins, and xylitol.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats instant oatmeal: If your dog accidentally takes a small bite of plain, cooked instant oatmeal, he may not display any symptoms.

However, if it includes harmful ingredients such as the ones mentioned above, he may suffer from health complications. Check the nutrition facts label to make sure it doesn’t contain dangerous ingredients. And if it does, get in touch with your veterinarian immediately.

Similarly, uncooked oatmeal should be stored properly, so your dog doesn’t accidentally eat it. Raw oats are harder to digest, so your canine might end up with an upset stomach after consuming it.

In summary: Oatmeal may be a great source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber for dogs. Whole, rolled, and steel-cut oats may be better options than instant oats because these are less processed. Remember to give these oat options in moderation as too much may cause weight gain.
