Dogs can eat black olives, but it shouldn’t be given regularly.
Olives are fruits that come from trees or shrubs belonging to the Oleaceae family. These are processed into olive oil, or cured and fermented then used in many culinary dishes. Black olives are actually ripe olives that were harvested once they were fully mature. Aside from black, they can also be purple or brown in colour, as opposed to unripe olives that are yellow or green.
In general, olives are not toxic for dogs. But since they are typically cured with salt to make them palatable, these types should not be fed to them. Too much salt may cause sodium ion poisoning, displaying signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, incoordination, and excessive thirst and urination.
How to feed black olives to your dog: Your canine pet should only eat plain and pitted black olives. The hard pits may cause choking and gastrointestinal obstruction. In addition, slice the black olive into bite-sized pieces to prevent choking. Limit his intake depending on his age, size, weight, physical activities, and dietary requirements.
Do not offer olives marinated in garlic, onion, and other ingredients from the allium family since these are toxic for canines. Anemia, gastrointestinal distress, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration are some of the side effects of allium consumption.
Similarly, olives that come from cocktails should be avoided. Just a small amount of alcohol can greatly affect your dog. Vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, and difficulty in breathing are symptoms of alcohol poisoning.
In summary: Olives are packed with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and protein. However, because of its salt content, he is better off eating other fruits and vegetables as treats. Browse through our “can dogs eat” category to discover more dog-friendly eats.
