Great Dane Rescue & Rehoming

About the shelter

With contacts throughout Australia, Great Dane Rescue and Rehoming Australia (GDRR) is a group of Great Dane lovers and supporters interested in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs of this particular breed.

GDRR is not a national organisation nor is it an actual rescue. But rather, it is a website and corresponding Facebook Group that consolidates information regarding Great Dane organisations in order to create a network for Great Dane Rescue coordinators around Australia, and promote the dogs that they are currently assisting. The site and Facebook page are owned and operated by Sacha Parker, a Great Dane enthusiast who runs “Balanced Canine,” a multi-modality residential clinic in the Hills district of New South Wales. Both avenues of networking are available to all national Great Dane rescue coordinators.

States in the GDRR network are represented by privately run and independent registered organisations or individuals. The site and Facebook group act as a “National Listing” and “Publication” service. GDRR has a large focus on providing education to the general public about what to look for in a Great Dane breeder. In addition, they also provide solutions and assistance on common behavioural, diet, and other issues pertaining to Great Danes. The site has informative and useful downloadable information about owning, caring, training, purchasing, adopting, and breeding, as well as other tips and tricks from Great Dane experts from all over Australia.

Profiles of adoptable gentle giants are available on the site or on the Facebook group page. Every Dane coming from a member of the network will come desexed. Interstate adoptions will be considered, although transportation costs are at the expense of the new owner. Like other groups, GDRR is always in need of foster carers and ask that interested individuals contact Sacha for more information.

Mission

  • Great Dane Rescue & Rehoming Australia aims to give the gentle giants of the canine world a helping hand by responsibly and ethically rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Great Danes.
  • The organisation looks to desex Great Danes and provide veterinary work for all dogs in their care, as well as provide a lifetime of after care for all dogs adopted through their organisation.
  • GDRR promotes assisting original families in finding the perfect home for their gentle giants, and educating the general public about choosing a Great Dane breeder to avoid the common pitfalls associated with owning a dog from the breed.

How you can help

From time to time, members of the network hold events like auctions, walks, and open days (state and organisation dependent). Their national Facebook group is highly active and buzzing with posts from its members and coordinators. It also contains the name of their member organisations for each state and their corresponding coordinators. Should you want to assist the organisation, GDRR asks that you contact the member group from your particular state. Information from the national Facebook group lists all account information for all member groups for donation purposes.
