Is Julisa Cruelty Free?

Yes, Julisa is cruelty free.

Julisa is an Australian brand that was created by Juliet Siu. The plant-based, vegan nail polish collection began in 2015, after Juliet decided to make a life-changing switch to using only clean products. She is an advocate of mindful beauty, which she defines as “choosing mindfully based on the effectiveness of the products, ingredients, and most importantly—who, where, how, and why the products are made.”

On their Certification page, Julisa proudly displays the logos of all the organisations they support. This includes People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) “cruelty free and vegan” logo. Julisa reveals, “Julisa products are made with utmost care for our vegan community, and do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or our finished products and pledge not to do so in the future.”

The brand dives deeper by sharing common animal-derived ingredients in nail polish:

Carmine – commonly used as a red pigment in nail polish and lipsticks, is derived from the shells of the female Cochineal insect (that’s right, bugs!).

Guanine – a crystalline material obtained from fish scales, is commonly used in nail polish for its shimmery effect.

Perfumes – the exact ingredients in perfumes are not required to be disclosed in most countries. Animal-derived ingredients that are likely to be used to make perfumes include Musk oil (dried secretion painfully obtained from musk deer, beaver, muskrat, civet cat, and otter genitals), shark liver oil, and Ambergris (derived from whale intestines).”

More than just divulging these animal-derived ingredients, the Gold Coast-based brand promises that all their products are free of carmine, guanine, and other potential animal-derived ingredients. “We replaced Carmine and Guanine that are commonly used in conventional, non-vegan nail polish formula with Mica, which is a naturally occurring type of mineral dust.”
