Can Dogs Eat Vanilla Yogurt?

Can Dogs Eat Vanilla Yogurt?

It depends.

Yogurt is a milk product created through bacterial fermentation. Cultures ferment the sugars found in the milk, resulting in the yogurt’s distinct tart flavour and unique consistency. After fermentation, additional ingredients are added such as sugar and fruit flavourings. Vanilla is a common flavour in commercially sold yogurt. The spice comes from the pods of flat-leaved vanilla.

In general, dogs can eat yogurt in small amounts. But this only holds true if they’re not allergic or intolerant to dairy. Dogs may also try vanilla yogurt as long as it is unsweetened. More importantly, it should not contain other potentially harmful ingredients such as xylitol. To prevent accidents, make sure to get your vet’s permission before letting your dog try a particular brand.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats vanilla yogurt: Check the nutrition facts label to pinpoint if there are any toxic ingredients. If this is the case, report your findings to your veterinarian immediately.

Not sure if your dog is intolerant or allergic to vanilla yogurt? Keep an eye on him over the next 24 hours. Observe him for skin irritation, ear infection, mild distress, gas, diarrhea, stomach upset, and vomiting.

Note that certain companies also produce vanilla-flavoured vegan yogurt. Soy milk, almond milk, and coconut milk are plant-based sources, so there is no lactose in them. However, it is best to consult with your vet before giving your pooch any of these alternatives.

In summary: When given correctly, dogs can reap the benefits of eating unsweetened vanilla yogurt. A spoonful added to his mealtime kibble can help improve his digestion.
