Can Dogs Eat Raw Fish?

Dogs should not eat raw fish because harmful organisms may be present.

Fish is an amazing source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D and B12. Dogs can eat small, short-lived fish such as flounder, salmon, pike, ocean whitefish, lake whitefish, herring, walleye, and Arctic char. However, they should be cooked and unseasoned form. 

Raw fish is not recommended for canine consumption because they may have bacteria such as salmonella and listeria, or parasites such as tapeworm and roundworm. Depending on the type of microorganism present, your dog can display varying symptoms after eating infected raw fish. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, panting and salivation, excessive thirst, incontinence, hyperactivity, dizziness, and cramping. In some extreme cases, food poisoning can even lead to heart palpitations, tremors, seizures, and even death. 

What to do if your dog accidentally eats raw fish: Remove the remaining raw fish from his reach, and check for fish bones in his mouth. Get in touch with your veterinarian to let him know what type of fish and how much raw fish your dog consumed. More importantly, report any symptoms that manifest over the next few hours or days. Bring him to the clinic if his conditions worsen.

If the raw fish contains ingredients such as salt, onion, and garlic, let your vet know about it as well. Sodium ion poisoning may lead to vomiting, weakness, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. Meanwhile, allium poisoning may result in pale gums, lack of energy, gastrointestinal distress, red blood cell damage, and anemia.

In summary: Your dog should not consume raw fish as it may possibly lead to digestive issues and other health complications. The fish may also contain bones that can puncture your dog’s mouth and throat, or cause tears in his intestines. The risks outweigh the benefits, so refrain from serving him raw fish and other raw meat.
