Can Dogs Eat Mayo?

Can Dogs Eat Mayo?

It is not advisable for dogs to eat mayo.

Traditionally known as mayonnaise, mayo is a thick and creamy sauce used as a base for other sauces or as a spread. It is commonly made using oil, egg yolk, and an acid, which can either be vinegar or lemon juice. Though dogs can consume cooked eggs, the other ingredients found in mayonnaise are not recommended for them.

More importantly, mayo does not contain the right amount of nutrients your dog needs to function at his best. Because of its high fat content, feeding mayo to your dog regularly may lead to weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and other health complications.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats mayo: A few licks won’t harm your canine, but consuming a considerable portion in one sitting may cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other digestive issues.

Check the nutrition facts label for all the ingredients used to make the mayo, and contact your veterinarian to report your observations. Just like cats, flavoured mayo with ingredients such as salt, garlic, onion, and chili are toxic for dogs.

Bring your dog to the vet if his symptoms worsen. If your dog is overweight and served mayo regularly, watch for these signs as well: nausea, fever, and lethargy. Your dog may end up having pancreatitis or diabetes.

In summary: Mayo may not be considered poisonous for dogs, but because it is high in fat and calories, it’s best not to feed it to them. If you’re thinking of adding mayo to your pet’s meal, speak with your veterinarian first to discuss all the risks that may come with it. Instead of mayo, your doctor may suggest better, healthier alternatives for your dog to try.
