Can Dogs Eat Basil?

Can Dogs Eat Basil?

Yes, dogs can eat basil in limited quantities.

Basil is an herb that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It goes by many other names: great basil, Thai basil, sweet basil, Saint Joseph’s Wort, and Genovese basil. Aside from its fragrant leaves, its edible flowers are used in various cuisines.

Available in fresh and dried forms, basil can be given to canines as ASPCA states it is non-toxic for dogs (and even cats!). The plant can help with inflammation and prevent cellular damage. Plus, it can also help calm anxious pooches.

How to feed basil to your dog: Speak with your vet and get his approval before letting your pup try a small piece of basil leaf. Though it’s uncommon, some dogs may be allergic to basil. Symptoms such as sneezing, vomiting, getting hives, swelling, diarrhea, and itchy ears may manifest.

Stick to offering washed basil by itself. Refrain from picking basil leaves from a cooked dish or combined with ingredients such as salt, onion, and garlic. That way, you can be sure it is 100% safe for your canine pet to eat. Similarly, do not give dried basil mixed with other potentially toxic seasonings.

Here are three ideas for basil treats your dog will love:

  1. Turn fresh basil leaves into dog-safe pesto.
  2. Add flavour to your pooch’s meal with this homemade dog food seasoning recipe
  3. A sprig of basil can instantly change the taste of your dog’s water supply.

In summary: Used as an herb and a spice, basil can be enjoyed by your dog in small amounts. When served right, the essential nutrients (vitamins A and K, calcium, iron, and manganese) and antioxidants found in basil can improve his various systems.
