Can Dogs Eat Artichokes?

Can Dogs Eat Artichokes?

Yes, dogs can eat artichokes.

Artichokes are vegetables that belong to the genus Cynara. The green-coloured flower heads are harvested as buds, which are only edible in this form. Countries that cultivate artichokes include Italy, Egypt, and Spain, to name a few. Aside from being consumed as a vegetable, it can also be transformed into tea and apéritif.

Artichokes do not include natural principles considered toxic for dogs. As such, dogs can reap the benefits of eating its stems and hearts without issues arising.

How to feed artichokes to your dog: Get your veterinarian’s approval before letting your dog try artichokes. You don’t want to trigger or worsen any of his existing health conditions.

Your dog can safely enjoy fresh or cooked artichokes as long as there are no oils or seasonings prepared with it. Common kitchen ingredients to avoid are onion, garlic, and chives. Make sure to rinse the artichoke in cold water, chopping it into smaller pieces before serving. Skip the leaves as they are hard and can cause accidental choking or intestinal blockage.

Here are three ideas for artichoke treats your dog will love:

  1. Steam the artichoke in plain water before letting him try it. Limit his servings to a few pieces depending on his size.
  2. Give a chopped piece of raw artichoke as his reward for being a good boy.
  3. Set aside portions of the artichoke heart and the stem for your dog. These are the most tender parts.

In summary: A summer favourite, artichoke is a safe and healthy vegetable treat for dogs. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, folic acid, and niacin. These can help support your dog’s immunity and muscle development. In addition, dogs with irritable bowels may benefit from eating the vegetable regularly.
