Can Dogs Eat Chives?

Can Dogs Eat Chives?

No, dogs cannot eat chives because of its toxic principles.

Chives are flowering plants that bear edible flowers and leaves. They are part of the Allium family, which includes onions and garlic. They’re known for being rich in fiber, antioxidants, potassium, calcium, folate, and vitamins K and A. Humans can eat the plant to help with heart health and inflammation.

Similar to garlic, onion, and leeks, this green-coloured herb should never be given to your dog. The N-propyl disulfide found in the scapes and flowers can damage his internal systems. Clinical signs include vomiting, breakdown of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia or Heinz body anemia), blood in urine, panting, weakness, and increased heart rate. In addition, the toxin can also cause gastroenteritis. This can manifest as nausea, drooling, oral irritation, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats chives: Just a small amount of chives in fresh, dried, powdered, or oil form can harm your pooch. It’s advisable to contact your veterinarian immediately even before symptoms develop, as some signs take several days to manifest.

Inform him of how much chives your dog ate, and report any changes in his mood or behaviour. You will most likely need to take your pet pooch to the emergency vet clinic to prevent poisoning.

In summary: Chives are one of the most harmful herbs your pooch can get his paws on. Make sure to store it immediately in a place your dog will not be able to access. If you own canine or feline pets, refrain from growing chives indoors or in your backyard.

Instead of giving him chives, find out which vegetables and fruits you can safely feed your pooch under our “can dogs eat” category.
