The short answer: No, Maybelline is not entirely cruelty free.
The long answer: Maybelline is a multinational cosmetics, skin care, fragrance, and personal care brand owned by L’Oréal. On its official website, Maybelline states: “L’Oréal no longer tests any of its products or any of its ingredients on animals, anywhere in the world nor does L’Oréal delegate this task to others. An exception could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.”
The last portion of the statement makes Maybelline not entirely cruel free since it allows authorities and third parties to test on animals whenever needed. This is the case in countries such as China, where Maybelline’s finished products may be tested on animals before being allowed to be sold in the market. However, L’Oréal announced that since 2014, “certain products manufactured and sold in China like shampoo, body wash or make-up are no longer tested on animals.” The brand has been committed to working alongside Chinese authorities and scientists to alternative testing methods, but there are no guarantees that this statement applies to other countries.
