Can Dogs Eat Oregano?

Can Dogs Eat Oregano?

It is not advisable to feed oregano to your dog.

Oregano is a flowering plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae or mint family. Its leaves are typically dried and used as a spice in Italian, French, Turkish, and Greek dishes. This plant can be grown indoors and its fresh leaves can be used for culinary and herbal purposes.

This spice is packed with antioxidants that can support a human’s immune system. However, when it comes to pets, oregano should only be given to your canine with a veterinarian’s approval. ASPCA lists oregano as a toxic plant that has gastrointestinal irritants that can lead to mild vomiting and diarrhea. Its toxins include flavones, monoterpenes, monoterpenoids, and polyphenols. In rare cases, oregano has caused serious side effects in dogs.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats oregano: Find out the amount of oregano your dog ate. Depending on his size and health conditions, he may not be affected by a small lick of the spice. Keep an eye on him. Observe him for any of the following symptoms: abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, slow heart rate, decreased heart rate, bruising, bleeding issues, and gastrointestinal ulcer. Contact your veterinarian immediately to determine the course of action.

Did your dog eat something seasoned with oregano? It is advisable to check the other ingredients used to prepare it. Other more poisonous spices such as garlic and onions may have been mixed into it. Also, remember that not all meat or seafood options should be given to your pet.

In summary: Be a responsible dog owner. Store your oregano properly and keep oregano plants away from your pet at all times. Though some sources state that the plant is good for dogs in moderation, you don’t want to risk giving your pooch an upset stomach. Speak with your vet before adding it to your pooch’s diet.
