Can Dogs Eat Japanese Yams?

Can Dogs Eat Japanese Yams?

Yes, dogs can occasionally eat Japanese yams as long as they’re cooked plainly.

Belonging to the family Dioscoreaceae, Japanese yams are a type of starchy tubers native to Japan and China. This yam cultivar is also called mountain yam (yamaimo) and Chinese yam. The long, oblong-shaped tuber has a thin, light brown exterior and a cream-coloured flesh. It has a subtly sweet taste similar to jicama

Just like other cultivated species, Japanese yams are grown for human consumption. The good news is that they can be fed to dogs. Though people can eat Japanese yam in raw form, it is safer for canines to have it fully cooked and unflavoured. Toxic ingredients such as garlic and onions should not be cooked with it.

How to feed Japanese yams to your dog: Consult with your veterinarian before giving anything new to your pooch. Find out if your dog can eat Japanese yam without triggering or aggravating any health conditions.

Start off by washing the Japanese yam to remove soil and other chemicals. Without adding any seasonings, boil, bake, or steam it until tender. Though the skin is thin, it’s best to peel it before letting your pup try it. Mash the soft, flaky flesh or give him a bite-sized piece to try for the first time. Then, observe his reaction over the next 24 hours.

In summary: With your doctor’s approval, Japanese yams can be integrated into your dog’s diet. This may be given occasionally to provide him with fiber, carbohydrates, and vitamins A and C.
