Can Dogs Eat Jalapeño?

Can Dogs Eat Jalapeño?

No, dogs cannot eat jalapeño because of the capsaicin found in it.

Jalapeño is commonly used by humans to add heat to their food. It is a medium-sized chili pepper that belongs to the species Capsicum annuum. The green-coloured fruit may be eaten as is, or ripened into yellow, orange, or red variants.

Though bell peppers can be safely eaten by your dog, jalapeños are another matter. The active component capsaicin can cause discomfort by leaving a burning sensation in your dog’s mouth, throat, and digestive system. Moreover, it may cause mild to severe stomach-related problems such as vomiting, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, and dehydration. Therefore, it is advisable not to give jalapeños to your canine even if he begs for it.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats a jalapeño: Take the remaining jalapeño away from your dog’s reach. Contact your veterinarian immediately, letting him know how much jalapeño your dog ate and what his symptoms are. Your vet may advise giving him lots of water to alleviate the burning sensation.

If a very small amount of jalapeño was consumed, your dog may not even manifest any signs. However, it is still recommended to keep a close eye on him over the next 24 hours. Watch for signs of sneezing, licking his chops, searching for water, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, and vomiting.

In summary: Though this spicy fruit is not included in highly toxic human food dogs should never have, it is best to avoid giving jalapeños to your dog because of the pain and discomfort it may cause him. Instead of giving him these hot peppers, discover dog-safe vegetables and fruits under our “can dogs eat” category.
