Can Dogs Eat Horseradish?

Can Dogs Eat Horseradish?

No, it is not advisable for dogs to eat horseradish.

Horseradish is a type of root vegetable that falls under the family Brassicaceae. This mustard family has other popularly grown and consumed vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage. Dogs can eat these aforementioned vegetables, but the same cannot be said about horseradish.

The good news is that horseradish does not have any toxic principles that may harm your canine. However, the white tapered root has a sharp, spicy taste that dogs dislike. This is caused by the compound isothiocyanate, which is activated when the root is ground, crushed, or grated.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats horseradish: Whether in raw root or sauce form, it is not advisable for your canine to consume horseradish. Doing so may create a burning sensation in his mouth, throat, nose, and digestive system. Plus, he may experience gastrointestinal complications. These may range from a simple tummy ache to more complex issues such as vomiting or diarrhea.

If your dog accidentally consumes horseradish, speak with your veterinarian. Find out how much he has eaten, and observe him for any unusual symptoms. A small amount will not cause permanent damage, but will most likely cause discomfort.

Meanwhile, if he ate the horseradish condiment, check the food label for other ingredients such as onions and garlic that may potentially harm him. Report these to your vet to prevent further poisoning.

In summary: Though horseradish is non-toxic to dogs, it should not be given to them because of its piquant taste. Aside from gastrointestinal issues, some pets may also be allergic to this root vegetable. Allergies may manifest as itchiness, hives, sneezing, and swelling of the affected parts.
