Can Dogs Eat Guava?

Can Dogs Eat Guava?

Yes, dogs can eat guava once in a while.

Guava is a tropical fruit that dogs can consume occasionally and in moderation. There are many varieties such as lemon guava and apple guava, which are both used for sauces, ales, dried snacks, candies, and more.

The green-coloured fruit is known for being rich in fiber, vitamin C, and folic acid. Feeding this to your pet can help his digestive system, boost his immune system, and keep his eyes, skin, and bones in tip-top condition. On the other hand, guava contains tons of sugar and carbohydrates. Letting him eat this fruit regularly and beyond his vet’s serving recommendations may lead to digestive upset or weight gain.

How to feed guava to your dog: Wash the fruit to take out the dirt and chemicals. Peel away the hard rind and scoop out the seeds as these may be choking hazards for your dog. Additionally, remove the leaves since these may cause stomach upset. Chop the guava flesh into bite-sized chunks your dog can chew.

With your vet’s approval, let your dog try a small piece of ripe guava for the first time. Observe him for any changes in the next 24 hours.

Though guava fruit is good for dogs, guava paste and jam should not be given to your pet because these may contain high amounts of sugar. Similarly, do not give your dog guava tea since the leaves are used to make them.

Here are three ideas for guava treats your dog will love:

  1. Chill chopped guava and give him a few pieces as refreshing treats!
  2. Add guava to his spoonful of plain or non-fat yogurt.
  3. Mash some guava and top it over his dog food.

In summary: Healthy and nutritious for dogs, guava is a great addition to your pet’s diet. As long as you give him limited amounts of the fresh fruit, he can reap all the benefits it has to offer.
