Can Dogs Eat Durian?

Can Dogs Eat Durian?

Yes, dogs can eat durian but only in small amounts and with caution.

Known for its strong smell, durian is a big fruit with a custard-like flesh encased in a hard, thorny rind. It comes from the tree of the same name, with 30 species belonging to the genus Durio. Also known as the king of fruits, durian is commonly sold in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand.

The strong odour of the durian fruit may initially turn off your dog, but for adventurous pups, they may appreciate its taste. Healthline describes the flavour as “tasting like cheese, almonds, garlic, and caramel all at once.” However, the hard outer rind and seeds should be avoided. The latter contains cyanide, which is toxic to dogs.

How to feed durian to your dog: Consult with your veterinarian to make sure your dog doesn’t have any allergies or pre-existing conditions that may be aggravated by eating the fruit. Once approved, let him try a tiny piece of durian that’s been carefully removed from the shell. Make sure there are no seeds, stems, and leaves as well.

Monitor your pet’s reaction in the next few hours. Watch for possible digestive issues that may pop up. These may range from vomiting and diarrhea to lethargy and fatigue. If these happen, it is best to find other fruits and vegetables to feed him.

In summary: Durian contains vitamin B complex, vitamin C, iron, and potassium. When given correctly and in moderate amounts, the fruit can benefit your dog in countless ways. On the other hand, overfeeding him can cause unnecessary weight gain.
