It is not recommended for cats to eat pig ears.
Pig ears are chew treats typically given to dogs. The dehydrated ears are made up of skin and cartilage, making them flexible and digestible toys for canines. Though dogs may be given pig ears with their doctors’ consent, it is advisable not to give these to cats as they are different animals with varying nutritional needs.
First, pig ears are high in fat and can cause digestive upset. The high fat content can also increase the risk of pancreatitis, manifesting as diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, and stomach pain. Secondly, there were reports of Salmonella infection in pets and humans caused by pig ears in 2019. If you give your cat raw pig ears, there is always a risk of salmonellosis. Symptoms include fever, shock, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, weight loss, dehydration, skin disease, mucus in stool, abnormally fast heart rate, swollen lymph nodes, and abnormal vaginal discharge. However, it is important to note that there are cats that do not display any symptoms of bacterial infection.
What to do if your cat accidentally eats pig ears: Contact your veterinarian and let him know how much pig ears your cat consumed. Review the ingredients and inform your vet if it includes onion and garlic (or other toxic flavourings) as well as propylene glycol or ethylene glycol (both chemical names for antifreeze). Cats are highly sensitive to this harmful compound.
In summary: High in fat and calories, pig ears may seem like an intriguing treat to give a cat that loves to chew on things. However, because of its ingredients and nutritional content, it is not recommended for cats. Instead of pig ears, why not give her catmint, ryegrass, and other cat-safe grass to gnaw on?
