Can Cats Eat Milo?

Can Cats Eat Milo?

Milo is a chocolate-flavoured powdered drink consisting of malt barley, milk powder, sugar, and cocoa. It was developed by Thomas Mayne in 1934 as a drink to help children obtain nutrients such as vitamins A, D, and B1 and iron.

Cats should not be given Milo due to the cocoa, sugar, and milk found in it. Cocoa contains caffeine and theobromine, which are highly toxic for cats. Meanwhile, sugar is a carbohydrate that cannot be processed by cats in large amounts. Regular consumption can cause dental issues, weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and other health complications. Lastly, milk cannot be digested by adult cats properly as their bodies no longer produce the enzyme lactase. As such, vomiting, bloating, severe diarrhea, and intestinal cramps may manifest after consuming milk and other dairy products.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats or drinks Milo: Her symptoms will depend on how much Milo she ate or drank. Inform your veterinarian about how much she accidentally consumed, and observe her closely for signs of chocolate poisoning. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, rapid breathing or heartbeat, high temperature, muscle rigidity, increased reflex response, low blood pressure, seizure, cardiac arrest, and coma.

In summary: Milo may be packed with calcium, iron, and B vitamins that help energise humans, but it should never be given to cats because of the complications that may develop. Instead of giving her Milo, why not choose to give her healthy drinks made using blended fruits or vegetables?
