Can Cats Eat Chia Seeds?

Can Cats Eat Chia Seeds?

Yes, cats can eat chia seeds in moderation.

Coming from the flowering plant Salvia hispanica of the mint family, chia seeds are edible seeds that are oval in shape and black or white in colour. When soaked in liquid, these tiny seeds form a gel-like coating, absorbing as much as 12 times their weight.

Chia seeds are known for being omega-3 fatty acid powerhouses, even beating the amount of omega-3 found in salmon. They also contain fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as vitamin A, folate, and potassium that can aid your cat’s overall health. The omega-3 fatty acids help improve her coat and reduce inflammation, while the fiber content absorbs toxins and eases digestive issues.

How to feed chia seeds to your cat: It is recommended that you grind the chia seeds slightly to increase the chances of your cat digesting them. Soak the chia seeds in water for about 20 minutes or until they become chewy, similar to the texture of tapioca pudding. Refrain from soaking chia seeds in milk since adult cats are generally lactose intolerant.

Before giving chia seeds for the first time, speak with your veterinarian about how much your cat can safely eat depending on her size, weight, age, and nutritional needs. Some sources recommend ¼ teaspoon as a good amount to start with. Be careful not to give her too much to prevent gastrointestinal problems from occurring.

Also, refrain from giving dry chia seeds to your cat since these may cause digestive blockages. If your cat has difficulty swallowing, it may be best not to give her this seed.

Here are three ideas for chia treats your cat will love:

  1. Sprinkle soaked chia seeds on your cat’s wet food.
  2. Instead of using water, let chia seeds soak in unseasoned meat broth.
  3. Let your cat try a few pieces of soaked chia seeds mixed with slices of her favourite fruit.

In summary: When prepared and given correctly, chia seeds can provide your cat with various health benefits. And since chia seeds are tasteless, most cats will not have issues eating them. Browse through our “can cats eat” category to find more seeds and grains you can safely give your pet cat.
