Can Cats Eat Cake?

Can Cats Eat Cake?

A cake is a baked pastry typically served during special occasions. It is usually prepared with base ingredients such as flour, sugar, milk, and eggs. In addition, toppings such as chocolate, nuts, and fruits are added to give flavour to cake.

Though plain cooked eggs may be eaten by cats, the other ingredients mixed in to make the cake may instantly cause them harm. Sugar and sugar substitutes such as xylitol can elevate insulin levels in a cat’s bloodstream and cause hypoglycemia. In addition, adult cats are lactose intolerant, so their stomachs are unable to process milk properly.

As for common cake flavours, chocolate can poison your cat because of the theobromine and caffeine found in it. Red velvet icing is also made with cocoa powder, so it isn’t good for cats. Cake topped with nuts such as walnuts and almonds can cause dilated pupils, upset stomach, and hyperventilation because of the chemical compound cyanogenic glycosides. Similarly, cakes topped or filled with avocados, cherries, grapes, lemons, and oranges should not be given to your cat. Eating these may result in digestive irritation, acute kidney failure, and even depression.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats cake: Review all the ingredients in the cake your cat ate. If it contains any toxic ingredients, contact your veterinarian immediately. The amount of cake your cat eats is another factor to consider. If she only had a small bite of plain sponge cake, she may not display any adverse effects. However, continue to keep an eye on her for the next few days. Report any changes in her mood, behaviour, eating, and litter box habits.

In summary: Cats do not have the ability to taste sweetness. They also cannot digest carbohydrates, so their bodies have no need for cakes. Since cakes are known to be high in fat and calories and low in nutritional value, you’re better off giving healthier treats to your pet cat.
