Yes, tomato plants are toxic to dogs.
Tomato plants are popular for their juicy fruits, which are packed with vitamins C and K, potassium, folate, and lycopene. They are typically grown outdoors, but need lots of sunlight daily to be able to thrive indoors.
The Solanum lycopersicum’s fruits are safe for humans to eat, but the same cannot be said for dogs. ASPCA reports that it has toxic principles that are harmful to dogs, cats, and horses. Solanine—a glycoalkaloid poison—is found on its leaves, stems, and raw fruits. When eaten by dogs, it can trigger gastrointestinal and neurological effects. Examples include stomach upset, increased heart rate, and/or loss of coordination.
What to do if your dog accidentally comes into contact with, chews, or eats tomato plants: If he ate the plain ripe fruit, he should not display any symptoms since it is non-toxic. However, you shouldn’t give him tomato-based sauce or dishes mixed with potentially dangerous seasonings. These include salt, onions, garlic, sugar, and other herbs and spices.
If you suspect that your dog ate a considerable amount of the tomato plant or its unripe fruits, keep a close eye on him. Observe him for any of these symptoms: Hypersalivation, inappetence, depression, and severe gastrointestinal upset. Weakness, dilated pupils, and slow heart rate may also occur. Contact your veterinarian to share your observations. If needed, take him to the vet with a sample of the tomato plant.
In summary: Growing tomato plants in your backyard won’t just liven up your garden. It’ll also give you fresh produce to add to your dishes. However, it is not a recommended plant to grow if you have dogs sniffing around. Though it only becomes toxic when a large quantity of the plant is consumed, you still want to take precautions.
