Yes and no.
Also spelled as liquorice, licorice is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Fabaceae. The sweet-tasting root is cultivated to enhance the flavour of tobacco, alcohol, and confections. In addition, some cultures use it as a medicinal herb.
Humans use licorice extract to treat indigestion, acid reflux, and bacterial infections. However, it should not be given to a dog without prior consultation with his veterinarian. Licorice root may be dangerous for canines when consumed in large amounts. Plus, it can cause complications for dogs already suffering from circulatory issues. The active ingredient found in the plant called glycyrrhiza can cause his body to retain water and raise his blood pressure.
Sources say licorice root can work as an oral herbal treatment for skin irritation and allergy since it acts as a cortisone. Some pet stores even carry licorice products especially created for dogs. However, as cortisone is a type of steroid, the amount you give should be carefully discussed with your vet beforehand. If given incorrectly, it may lead to muscle breakdown, hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels), and kidney damage.
On the other hand, dogs should not eat all kinds of licorice candy, whether red or black. The sugar, anise, and other artificial ingredients found in it will not benefit him. Feeding him this type of candy can lead to complications such as gastrointestinal issues, tooth decay, weight gain, and diabetes.
What to do if your dog accidentally eats licorice candy: Since it doesn’t actually contain licorice extract, the red variety is less harmful than the black one. However, the sugar and flour may make his stomach ache.
Depending on its ingredients and how much your dog consumed, black licorice can cause serious complications. If there are high amounts of anise or licorice extract, watch out. He may experience vomiting, lethargy, weakness, increased thirst, and excessive urination.
Licorice candy sometimes contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener. If you find it on the ingredient list, contact your veterinarian immediately as it is extremely toxic for dogs.
In summary: Play it safe. Unless recommended by your vet, keep licorice root and candy away from your dog. You can expand his palate by letting him try canine-safe treats. Find out which vegetables and fruits you can feed your pet under our “can dogs eat” category.
