Can Dogs Eat Black Walnuts?

Can Dogs Eat Black Walnuts?

No, dogs cannot eat black walnuts because they’re poisonous to dogs.

Walnuts come from the Juglandaceae family, specifically from the genus Juglans. The black walnut, or Juglans nigra, is a tree that’s native to North America. The plant is cultivated for its beautiful deep brown wood and edible seeds. These spherical fruits have brown-green husks that contain small, hard nuts, which are reportedly harder to process than English walnuts.

Eaten by humans, black walnuts are commonly used in dishes and desserts. These may range from salads, pastas, and vegetables to cookies, cakes, and pies. On the other hand, these cannot be fed to dogs as they are highly toxic. Due to the chemical juglone, black walnuts can cause gastrointestinal issues in canine pets.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats black walnuts: American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that dogs who consume moldy black walnuts or even its husks may experience tremors and seizures. Shavings, on the other hand, can cause incoordination. Also watch for uncontrollable shaking, vomiting, diarrhea, and inflammation of the pancreas.

Speak with your veterinarian and report how many black walnuts your dog has eaten. Symptoms may vary in severity depending on his size, weight, and existing health conditions.

In summary: High in fat and calories, black walnuts should never be given to your dog. Just a small amount can cause severe symptoms. Aside from the nut being prone to molds, the wood itself may also be poisonous for canines.
