Can Dogs Eat Black Beans?

Can Dogs Eat Black Beans?

The short answer: Yes, but in moderation.

The long answer: Black beans belong to the list of beans your dog can safely consume. They are great sources of plant-based protein, natural fibers, vitamins C and K, and manganese. Black beans can help burn fat, regulate blood sugar, and strengthen your pet’s immune system.

Take note that the protein found in black beans does not replace the protein found in animal meat such as turkey. Therefore, black beans should only be incorporated into his meals or given as treats. The latter should only make up 10% of his dietary requirements.

How to feed black beans to your dog: Refrain from serving your dog raw or canned beans, which are packed with additives and flavourings. It is best to feed him dried black beans that have been soaked overnight, drained completely, and cooked properly.

To wash the beans, soak them in a bowl and drain the water. Repeat the process for a few times while discarding damaged beans and debris. Leave the black beans to soak overnight.

To cook the beans, boil then simmer them in water without any seasoning for about 1.5 hours. Make sure the black beans are soft and cool before serving them to your canine.

Here are three ideas for black bean treats your dog will love:

  1. Mix the boiled black beans with rice, meat, and vegetables for homemade dog food.
  2. Feed the cooked black beans as a reward during a training session.
  3. Make polenta using cornmeal, black beans, carrots, and nutritional yeast.

In summary: Delicious and nutritious, black beans can be added to your list of dog-friendly human food. Fed to your pet occasionally and in small amounts, the texture and flavour of black beans will make mealtimes and snack times interesting for your pooch.
