Can Cats Eat Prawn Crackers?

Can Cats Eat Prawn Crackers?

No, cats should not eat prawn crackers.

Prawn crackers is a deep-fried snack popular in Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine. It is commonly made using prawn, tapioca flour (also called tapioca starch), and water. Prawns may be eaten in general by cats, but the seafood cracker should be cooked and prepared without onion, garlic, salt, and other harmful preservatives. Onion or garlic can cause cats to display these symptoms: vomiting, weakness, fever, high heart rate, blood in urine, panting, skin discolouration, appetite loss, abdominal pain, and breakdown of red blood cells. Meanwhile, salt can cause vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, lethargy, decrease in appetite, and excessive thirst or urination.

Tapioca flour, another main ingredient of prawn crackers, is known for being high in carbohydrates and sugar. These aren’t good for your pet cat since her body cannot digest them in large quantities. As an obligate carnivore, she needs protein-rich food to function at her best.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that some cats may be allergic or intolerant to certain types of seafood. If your cat is allergic to prawns, it may manifest as any of the following: excess scratching, skin biting, hair loss, difficulty in breathing, swelling, and inflammation.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats prawn crackers: Review the ingredients list. Get in touch with your veterinarian if she consumed a substantial quantity and is exhibiting any of the signs mentioned above. If she munched on prawn crackers seasoned with poisonous ingredients, contact your vet immediately.

In summary: Deep-fried prawn crackers contain ingredients that are deemed unhealthy for cats. Though she may be curious about its taste and texture, it is safer not to give the oil-laden snack to your pet cat so she doesn’t get accustomed to it.
