Can Cats Eat Peas?

Can Cats Eat Peas?

The short answer: Yes, but in moderation.

The long answer: Containing protein and carbohydrates, peas are legumes that cats can safely consume. They are excellent sources of fiber, which can help support gastrointestinal health. Green or garden peas, snow peas, and snap peas are the three types of peas that can be eaten by your cat.

How to feed peas to your cat: Cats can consume fresh, frozen, or cooked peas as long as they are prepared without any seasoning. Salt, garlic, and onion are harmful ingredients that should not be used when cooking peas for cats. Also, avoid serving canned peas since these may have preservatives and be high in salt.

Speak to the veterinarian before feeding her peas, and control the amount she eats to avoid diarrhea. For her first taste of peas, you can mash one to two pieces and place it over her meal. Always keep an eye on your cat whenever she eats peas. If you are giving her frozen peas, make sure they are soft enough for her to prevent choking.

Here are three ideas for pea-based treats your cat will love:

  1. Try this homemade cat meal consisting of chicken, carrots, peas, and rice.
  2. Give a piece of frozen peas as a treat on a hot day.
  3. Mash some boiled peas and add it to your cat’s meal.

In summary: Cats are obligate carnivores that must consume animal-based protein to thrive. However, they can be fed plant-based food in small amounts such as peas. Peas are low in calories, high in fiber, and contain vitamins A, B, and K, folate, and potassium that can improve your cat’s overall health. When given in moderation, these low-calorie crunchy legumes are great treats that can complement your cat’s meals.
