It is not recommended for cats to eat durian.
Durian is an edible fruit from the tree plant belonging to the genus Durio. Due to its impressive size, distinct smell, and hard, thorny husk, it is called the “king of fruits.” The white to yellow-coloured flesh may be eaten, while its large seeds may be consumed after cooking. The fruit is typically used for culinary and medicinal purposes.
Though durian is not toxic for cats, most feline pets dislike its pungent odour. In addition, the pulp is high in sugar, which cats do not need and cannot process in large quantities. When eaten by cats, durian may cause stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea.
What to do if your cat accidentally eats durian: Observe your cat for any changes in her mood, behaviour, eating, drinking, and excreting habits. Contact your veterinarian for any notable changes. The smell of her poop would most likely change due to durian consumption.
Also, note that raw durian seeds are a choking hazard for cats because of their size and toughness. They should be stored or disposed of properly to avoid accidents.
In summary: Durian is a fruit that contains carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and fat. It offers no essential nutrients that would benefit cats. Though it is intriguing to see how your cat would react to the complex flavours of durian, play it safe by not offering it to her. Instead, offer other cat-safe fruits such as apples, watermelon, and strawberries. However, make sure it doesn’t go beyond two percent of her daily recommended calories.
