Can Cats Eat Basil?

Can Cats Eat Basil?

Yes, cats can eat basil.

Basil is a culinary herb that belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which catnip and catmint also fall under. It comes in many varieties, and goes by many names such as great basil, sweet basil, Saint Joseph’s Wort, Thai basil, and Genovese basil. The fresh, dried, and fried leaves as well as the edible flowers are commonly enjoyed in culinary dishes.

Cats, in general, can eat basil. However, some may be allergic to basil, so before feeding her the herb or bringing home a basil plant, speak with your veterinarian. Your cat may be allergic to basil if she displays any of these symptoms: hives, swelling, discharge, vomiting, and respiratory problems.

If your cat suddenly forms an unusual habit of munching on basil and other plants, it may be a sign that there is something wrong with her digestive system.

How to feed basil to your cat: According to the ASPCA, the mint-scented basil is non-toxic to cats. Because of this, your feline pet can enjoy a few of the thick, chewy leaves in its fresh form. You can chop and sprinkle it over your cat’s food.

When serving her cooked basil, make sure that no other harmful ingredients are mixed with it. Seasonings such as salt, garlic, and onion powder are big no-nos for cats and can cause a slew of health complications.

In summary: Though basil has nutrients that benefit humans, these do not provide the essential vitamins and minerals your cat needs. A small amount of basil may do her good when she needs to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, or ease stomach spasms. However, avoid overfeeding as this may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Basil can also cause tooth decay when fed regularly.
