Some pitcher plants are mildly toxic to cats.
Pitcher plant is a general term for carnivorous plants with modified leaves that resemble liquid-holding jugs. Called pitfall traps, the unique foliage contains nectar that can digest the prey it manages to capture. Plant families that have pitcher plants include Sarraceniaceae and Nepenthaceae.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that the California pitcher plant, which belongs to the Sarraceniaceae family, is non-toxic for cats. However, various sources state that some Asian pitcher plants (also called Nepenthes or monkey cups) can cause mild stomach upset in felines after consumption.
What to do if your cat accidentally comes into contact with, chews, or eats pitcher plants: As there are no known toxic principles in the roots, stems, and leaves of California pitcher plants, nothing bad should happen if your cat simply brushes her body against it.
On the other hand, she may experience mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation if she bites or eats a tropical pitcher plant. When this happens, contact your veterinarian immediately. Take her away from the plant, and monitor her in a confined space over the next 24 hours.
In addition, remember that there are always risks involved when your cat eats plant matter. As an obligate carnivore, your pet does not have the ability to digest large amounts. If a considerable portion is consumed in one sitting, it can cause accidental choking and/or intestinal blockage.
