No, lipstick plants are not toxic to cats.
The lipstick plant or lipstick vine’s scientific name is Aeschynanthus humilis. It grows bright red buds that emerge from calyces, making them appear like extended lipstick tubes. Native to China, the lipstick plant belongs to the genus Aeschynanthus. This genus has about 150 species of evergreen flowering plants.
Lipstick plants are non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses as stated by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Because the lipstick plant has no toxic principles, it is safe to grow around your pets.
What to do if your cat accidentally comes into contact with, chews, or eats lipstick plants: The plant should not affect your cat in any adverse manner if she comes into contact with, chews, or eats a part of it. Nevertheless, there are always risks associated with plant matter consumption. As an obligate carnivore, your cat can only digest small amounts of plant matter. If your cat eats a large chunk or if parts of it are hard to chew, she may experience accidental choking and/or intestinal blockage.
In addition to difficulty in digesting plants, poisoning may occur if the lipstick plant or its soil contains toxic chemicals from pesticides or fertilisers. If you suspect this happened, monitor her closely. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, twitching, fitting, difficulty in breathing, shock, and collapse. Skin inflammation or swelling, depression or coma, and changes in her drinking, urinating, and appetite may also manifest. Contact your veterinarian and report your observations.
In summary: Lipstick plants can grow in a home that has cats around. But for it to fully thrive, keep it away from your pet and place it in a well-lit area.
