Can Cats Eat Potatoes?

Can Cats Eat Potatoes?

The short answer: Yes and no.

The long answer: Potatoes are root vegetables that cats can occasionally eat as long as they are prepared simply and cooked properly. Cats cannot eat raw, unripe potatoes because they contain a lethal chemical known as solanine, which is poisonous to both animals and humans. The solanine can be found on the skin and the actual potato.

Cats can enjoy eating cooked potatoes from time to time. Too much of the vegetable may lead to obesity, pancreatitis, and arthritis. You can choose to feed your cat boiled, grilled, or even mashed potatoes as long as they do not contain salt, cheese, onion, garlic, and savoury sauces. It is not advisable to give your cat deep-fried potatoes or baked potato skins.

How to feed potatoes to your cat: Take out the stems, shoots, and green parts of your potato. Wash it thoroughly, then peel off the skin. Boil, steam, bake, or grill it without flavourings or seasonings. Let it cool before mashing or chopping it into bite-sized pieces.

If you’re letting your cat eat potatoes for the first time, only serve her a small cube and observe her reactions within the next 24 hours. Consult with your veterinarian if you notice any changes.

Here are three ideas for potato treats your cat will love:

  1. These purrfect potato cups can be enjoyed by both you and your cat!
  2. This homemade cat food recipe consists of chicken, rice, potato, and olive oil.
  3. Mash some boiled potato and add it to your cat’s meal.

In summary: Potatoes are packed with protein, potassium, vitamins B and C, carbohydrates, and fiber. Though cats do not need much of these nutrients, she can enjoy eating cooked potatoes once in a while. Make sure your uncooked potatoes are stored properly. These raw vegetables may cause gastrointestinal blockage if your cat tries to eat them.
