Can Cats Eat Olive Oil?

Can Cats Eat Olive Oil?

Yes, cats can eat olive oil in moderation.

Olive oil is a type of liquid fat that is obtained from unripe olive fruit. It is known for being packed with beneficial fatty acids, vitamins E and K, and other powerful antioxidants. Many people use olive oil for cooking their food, and similarly, this technique can be used to prepare cat food since olive oil is generally non-toxic for cats.

When fed correctly to your cat, olive oil can improve her immune system and facilitate weight loss. It can even help reduce hairballs, decrease constipation, and lessen the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Her skin and fur can also become softer and shinier.

How to feed olive oil to your cat: Be sure to choose extra virgin olive oil for your cat as it is not treated with chemicals and is less acidic. Because of the way it is processed, it retains the most amount of natural antioxidants and vitamins.

Start off with a very small amount of oil and observe how she responds to it. Since olive oil is high in fat, you should limit how much you give and follow your veterinarian’s recommendation. One tablespoon of olive oil given three times a week should suffice. More servings given throughout the week may cause vomiting, diarrhea, skin dehydration, and eventual weight gain.

Here are three ideas for olive oil treats your cat will love:

  1. Prepare this homemade chicken and rice cat food using olive oil.
  2. Try baking these Sardine Catnip Crunchies for your kitty.
  3. Let your cat nibble on carrot and catnip treats, which can be mixed with olive oil.

In summary: With your vet’s approval, extra virgin olive oil can be given to your pet cat occasionally and moderately. It is a good dietary supplement that can aid her digestive, endocrine, and immune systems.
