It is not recommended for cats to eat mustard.
Ranging from yellow to dark brown, mustard is a condiment that comes from the seeds of the mustard plant. The seeds are crushed and combined with water, vinegar, lemon juice, salt, wine, honey, and other spices and additives to produce the condiment. It may be sweet or spicy depending on the seeds used, and is commonly added to meats, vegetables, sauces, and glazes.
Though the ASPCA does not list the mustard plant as toxic for cats, many sources cite that mustard is not good for cats. Eating the seeds may cause severe gastroenteritis in cats, which may manifest as persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea. In addition, its flavour has been described as spicy, which does not sit well with cats. The hotness level can make them gassy and nauseous.
What to do if your cat accidentally eats mustard: Take note of how much mustard your cat ingested in one sitting. If it was only a lick, she may not display any alarming symptoms.
Review the nutrition facts label. If your cat ate mustard with high amounts of harmful ingredients (lemon, wine, salt, and honey, to name a few), she may suffer from food poisoning. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, salivation, twitching and fitting, difficulty in breathing, shock or collapse, skin inflammation or swelling, depression or coma, and changes in drinking, urinating, and appetite. Contact your veterinarian if any of these signs manifest.
In summary: Hold the mustard when it comes to giving your cat plainly cooked meat. Mustard does not contain vital nutrients your feline pet needs to thrive. Instead of letting her try common table condiments, treat Kitty to cat-safe fruits and vegetables!
