Can Cats Eat Cumin?

Can Cats Eat Cumin?

Yes, cats can eat cumin but only in moderation.

Cumin is used as a spice in many cuisines throughout the world. Taken from the flowering plant, the seeds are dried then used in whole or crushed forms. The spice contains fat, protein, fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and manganese.

Though spices in general should not be fed to cats, cumin may be given in limited amounts as it is safe for them to eat. Cumin can assist your cat in relieving her indigestion, managing her weight, and preventing diseases due to the natural antioxidants present.

How to feed cumin to your cat: Limit her cumin intake to no more than a teaspoon or mouthful a few times a week. Better yet, consult with your veterinarian to find out the best serving portion and frequency based on your cat’s age, size, weight, physical activities, and health conditions.

Start off by letting her try a lick of ground cumin, and observe for changes in her mood, behaviour, eating, drinking, and excreting habits. Stop feeding her cumin if she displays any of these symptoms: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and loss of appetite.

Here are three ideas for cumin treats your cat will love:

  1. Add a sprinkle of ground cumin on your cat’s dry kibble.
  2. Let your cat try one whole piece of cumin and see how she enjoys its texture.
  3. Mix a pinch of cumin with her wet food.

In summary: Cumin is one of the warm and aromatic spices your cat can eat. However, it must only be given in moderation to prevent digestive issues from occurring. Remember that cats are obligate carnivores that thrive on a mainly protein-rich diet. These nutritious and balanced meals may be obtained from commercially sold cat food and treats.
