Can Cats Eat Catmint?

Can Cats Eat Catmint?

Yes, cats can eat catmint.

Just like the catnip, catmint is a flowering plant that belongs under the Nepeta genus and Lamiaceae family. Though many people mistake them to be exactly the same, the two are different plants. Catmint is Nepeta mussinii, while catnip is Nepeta cataria.

Cats can safely nibble on catmint as it is non-toxic for them. They may even roll around the leaves of the perennial lavender-coloured blooms. Similar to mint, the leaves of the catmint are typically used as a culinary herb. However, unlike catnip, catmint contains low amounts of nepetalactone. This compound is what causes cats to get a euphoric high after they munch on catnip. Because of this, catmint has little to no effect on most cats.

How to feed catmint to your cat: There are not enough online citations to indicate how much catmint is safe for cats to eat. In addition, ASPCA mentions catmint under the catnip category, stating that “it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. It makes some cats sedated and others stimulated.” Therefore, be wary of how much you give to your cat.

To be on the safe side, consult with your veterinarian before letting your cat try catmint. With his consent, start with one small piece of catmint leaf and observe your cat for the next 24 hours.

Here are three ideas for catmint treats your cat will love:

  1. Replace the catnip with catmint for this kitty-approved tea.
  2. Let your cat try a fresh piece of catmint leaf taken from your backyard.
  3. Catmint soup anyone? Try using fresh catmint leaves for this existing recipe.

In summary: Though cats are obligate carnivores that need animal-based protein to thrive, a small amount of plant-based treats won’t do her any harm. Catmint is a safe option for her to enjoy as long as you have your vet’s approval.
