It is not advisable for cats to eat cashew butter.
Cashew butter comes from baked or roasted cashew nuts. These are grounded and turned into a thick, consumable spread. It can be slathered over bread, used as dipping sauce for fruits, or added to oatmeal. Though high in plant-derived protein, unsaturated fats, and vitamin B, cashew butter is also high in calories.
A few pieces of crushed, unsalted cashews may not be poisonous to cats. However, the same cannnot be said for cashew butter containing salt and cinnamon. These are dangerous for your beloved pets. Similar to peanut butter, this creamy spread should not be given to cats regularly. Too much in one sitting may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
What to do if your cat accidentally eats cashew butter: You don’t need to worry if your cat got her paws on homemade cashew butter made only with coconut oil. But if she ate commercially produced cashew butter, check the nutrition facts label immediately. See if all the listed ingredients are safe for your cat.
If you suspect that some ingredients are not good for her, speak with your veterinarian. More importantly, observe your cat for poisoning. Common symptoms include salivation, skin inflammation or swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, and depression or coma. In addition, watch for twitching, fitting, difficulty in breathing, shock, collapse, and changes in drinking, urinating, and appetite.
In summary: Cashew butter may be a tempting treat to give your cat, but it doesn’t offer the necessary nutrients she needs to thrive. Speak with your veterinarian and get their consent before letting your cat try it. Feeding your cat cashew butter on a regular basis may lead to pancreatitis and weight gain.
