Can Cats Eat Canned Salmon?

Can Cats Eat Canned Salmon?

A ray-finned fish that belongs to the Salmonidae family, salmon can be occasionally fed to your pet cat as long as it is cooked without flavourings and preservatives. This type of oily fish is known for having good amounts of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B12, which may benefit your cat.

However, canned salmon is another matter as it may have ingredients that are considered harmful for your cat. Salt is one of the most common flavourings mixed with canned salmon. Aside from salt, salmon canned in oil is also not good for cats since it is high in fat.

If you really need to feed your cat canned salmon, pick the ones tinned in spring water and containing the least amount of sodium. Be sure to discuss your options with your veterinarian before adding it to your pet’s diet. Your doctor may limit the quantity and frequency of feeding canned salmon depending on your cat’s age, size, weight, physical activities, and health conditions.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats canned salmon: Check the nutrition facts label to find out the ingredients used for the canned salmon. If it contains salt and other potentially toxic ingredients, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Also, try to find out how much canned salmon your cat ate. A high intake of salt may cause the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, incoordination, and excessive thirst or urination. Extreme cases may even result in tremors, seizures, or coma.

In summary: Your cat should not get used to eating canned salmon as the salt found in it may cause health complications. Too much salt may cause severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, stomach inflammation, and even death. But as long as your cat isn’t allergic to this type of fish, freshly cooked and unflavoured salmon may be given to her as an occasional treat.
