Are Succulent Plants Toxic to Dogs?

Some succulent plants are toxic to dogs.

Succulents are defined by Wikipedia as “plants with parts that are thickened, fleshy, and engorged.” These swollen leaves, stems, and roots help them hold water, so they can survive in areas with high temperatures, scarce water, and even rocky soil conditions. These days, many homeowners grow succulents because of their unique appearance and small size.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) shares that there are toxic and non-toxic varieties of succulent plants. Toxic ones include jade plants and mother in law’s tongue (or snake plants). Harmless ones, on the other hand, include the UFO plant (which belongs to the Pilea genus), hens and chicks, and variegated wax plant, to name a few.

What to do if your dog accidentally comes into contact with, chews, or eats a succulent plant: Before bringing home a new succulent, speak with your veterinarian to make sure what you picked is safe for canines. Remember that your dog may get intrigued by the new plant you bring home, so observe him closely when he first approaches it. If your dog is highly curious, he may play with the leaves or sniff the plant. Be sure to keep it away from him especially if the succulent is thorny.

Your dog should not experience anything alarming after coming into contact with a non-toxic succulent plant. But if he eats a considerable amount in one sitting, he may experience stomach upset.

If you dog played with toxic succulents or those sprayed with poisonous chemicals, get in touch with your veterinarian immediately. Take the plant away from him, and watch him for signs of poisoning. Gastrointestinal, respiratory, and skin issues may manifest.

In summary: With the right conditions, non-toxic succulent plants can thrive inside a dog parent’s home or backyard. Always be a responsible dog and plant owner by reviewing these lists from PetMD, Pet Poison Helpline, and ASPCA.
