No, air plants are not toxic to dogs.
Air plants or Tillandsia are unique plants that can grow without being planted in soil. They come from the Bromeliaceae family, and have about 650 different species. Originally found in forests, deserts, and mountains in the North American region, air plants have successfully crossed over to households as they require minimal maintenance.
Tillandsia are a safe bet for canine pet owners thinking of growing indoor plants. The plant does not have any toxic chemicals that may harm your dog. Munching on its silvery leaves is not a problem as long as your pooch does not eat large portions of the plant in one sitting. Doing so may cause accidental choking or intestinal blockage.
What to do if your dog accidentally comes into contact with, chews, or eats air plants: Air plants should not create complications in your pet if he accidentally eats or bites a small piece of the plant. The problem arises if he swallows it whole, and it blocks his airway or intestines.
To determine if your dog is choking, observe him for these symptoms: distress, pawing at the mouth, rubbing his face against the ground, gagging or retching, salivation, coughing, and cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the mucous membranes).
If you suspect that he’s experiencing intestinal blockage, watch him for persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weakness or lethargy (caused by dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance), and difficulty in pooping or diarrhea. Weight loss may also occur.
In summary: Air plants may be epiphytes or aerophytes. The former does not need any soil to grow, while the latter grows on shifting desert soil. But no matter what their species are, air plants are generally non-toxic to dogs. As a paw parent, you can liven up your space by bringing home this unusual houseplant.
