Can Dogs Eat Tomato Sauce?

Can Dogs Eat Tomato Sauce?

It depends.

Tomato sauce comes from stewed tomatoes that are mixed with various ingredients. On their own, ripe and unprocessed tomatoes can be fed to your dog. However, it’s the other ingredients cooked with the tomato sauce that may cause your pet harm. Tomato sauce mixed with meat such as beef and chicken can be served to your dog if they are prepared without seasonings and herbs. Salt, garlic, onion, and sugar are some common examples. In addition, tomato sauce with spicy peppers and mushrooms are not recommended.

Some countries use the words tomato sauce and ketchup interchangeably. Dogs should never eat ketchup because of the salt, sugar, and other artificial flavourings found in it. Similarly, avoid giving store-bought or canned tomato sauce as these may contain harmful and artificial ingredients.

What to do if your dog accidentally eats tomato sauce with toxic ingredients: Check the nutrition facts label to discover the complete list of ingredients used to make the sauce. If you find potentially harmful ingredients on the list, contact your veterinarian immediately. Find out how much he ate and observe your dog for any changes.

Salt poisoning can lead to severe dehydration, non-stop peeing, stomach inflammation, and electrolyte imbalance. Dehydration can cause his brain cells to shrink, rupture, or create hemorrhages. Meanwhile, stomach inflammation can cause vomiting and diarrhea. As for garlic and onion, these can cause anemia by damaging the red blood cells. Watch for signs of weakness, vomiting, and difficulty in breathing. Lastly, consuming excessive amounts of sugar can cause stomach troubles and inflammation.

In summary: Dogs should only be fed plain tomato sauce that do not contain toxic ingredients. If you are adamant about including tomato sauce in your pooch’s daily diet, be sure to consult with your veterinarian first. Find out how you can safely prepare it, how much, and how often you can give it to him. Better yet, treat him to fresh, ripe tomatoes that have been washed and sliced into pieces.
