Can Cats Eat Sesame Seeds?

Can Cats Eat Sesame Seeds?

Yes, cats can occasionally eat sesame seeds.

Sesame seeds come from the flowering plant of the same name, belonging to the genus Sesamum. The edible seeds grow in pods, and are transformed into oil and used as a common ingredient in many cuisines throughout the world. Unhulled sesame seeds come in a golden brown colour, while hulled seeds are usually white and turn brown when roasted.

Cats are allowed to eat some sesame seeds, but keep in mind that they’re not easily digestible. The seeds are packed with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, vitamin E, copper, iron, selenium, and zinc. These nutrients can help support and boost your cat’s immune system. In addition, they can help decrease inflammation, improve bone health, and reduce oxidative stress.

How to feed sesame seeds to your cat: Consult with your veterinarian to find out how much sesame seeds you can safely give your cat. The amount may depend on her size, weight, age, physical activity, and existing health conditions.

Give your cat plainly roasted sesame seeds, and keep an eye on her as she eats them. After feeding the seeds, make sure to brush her teeth to prevent the seeds from being lodged between her teeth and creating other dental problems.

In summary: Cats are obligate carnivores that thrive on a diet containing animal-derived protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Though sesame seeds are not toxic for cats, they should be given in moderation since they don’t contain all the nutrients your cat needs.
