Can Cats Eat Grains?

Can Cats Eat Grains?

Yes, cats can eat grains in limited amounts.

Grains are small, hard seeds that come from cereal and legume crops. They are harvested and dried for human and animal consumption. Popular cereal crops include rice, corn, oats, rye, wheat, and barley. Meanwhile, popular grain legumes or pulses include common beans, soybeans, peas, peanuts, and lentils. Most of these grains can be eaten by cats in small amounts, and are already present in commercially sold cat food since they are packed with fiber and essential fatty acids.

The quickest way to give your pet cat-safe grains is through commercially sold cat food recommended by your veterinarian. These are made to provide nutritionally complete and balanced meals to your pet. The servings are also portioned to make sure they provide the adequate amount of carbohydrates your cat needs.

How to feed grains to your cat: You can introduce grains to your pet one by one and gradually. Do this after consulting with your vet to confirm which grains work best for her age, size, weight, activity level, and other health conditions. Some cats may have gluten allergies or intolerances, so they may need to skip the grains.

Make sure to clean and prepare the grain without seasonings. Never add ingredients such as salt, garlic, and onion as these are all harmful for cats.

Here are three ideas for grain-based treats your cat will love:

  1. Try making Almost-Spot’s Stew using rice, chicken, and vegetables
  2. Cooked brown rice or oatmeal can help make a nutritious meal for diabetic cats.
  3. Kitty will purr with delight after trying homemade treats made from cornmeal.

In summary: Included in pet food, grains provide cats with nutrients that can benefit their bodies. Unless your cat has grain allergies or intolerances, IBD, or inflammatory conditions, you can offer this carbohydrate to your cat in controlled amounts.
