Can Cats Eat Aloe Vera?

Can Cats Eat Aloe Vera?

Cats cannot eat aloe vera because of its toxic contents.

Aloe vera is a common houseplant that is used by humans for cosmetic and culinary purposes. Growing tall, thick leaves that can reach up to 39 inches, the succulent goes by other names such as true aloe, Octopus plant, Torch plant, Candelabra plant, and Barbados aloe.

Though aloe vera is completely safe for humans, the same cannot be said for cats. This is because aloe vera contains active ingredients called anthraquinone glycosides. These have a purgative quality that can cause mild to moderate toxicity to your feline pet after she ingests them. Your cat ends up with an increase in mucus production and water in her colon.

Saponins and aloins are other harmful components that may be found in most aloe species. The effects of their consumption include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, anorexia, lethargy, and change in urine colour.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats aloe vera: Bring your pet cat to the veterinarian immediately. Share what kind of aloe species your cat ate, and how much of it she consumed. Cats Protection advises not to wait for symptoms to appear, and not forcing your cat to vomit or drink salt water.

In summary: Aloe vera should always be kept away from your cat at all times, whether it is in plant, drink, or medicine form. Furthermore, do not allow your cat to brush its body against the aloe vera plant or nibble at it. To avoid cat poisoning, make it a point to consult with your veterinarian before bringing home a new houseplant.
