Can Dogs Eat Peppers?

Can Dogs Eat Peppers?

The short answer: Yes and no.

The long answer: Peppers are fruits of capsicum plants that come in different sizes, colours, and flavours. There are small, spicy peppers that add heat to dishes, as well as big, sweet-tasting bell peppers. Spicy peppers such as cayenne, chili peppers, jalapenos, and serrano cannot be eaten by your dog. Because of the active component (capsaicin) found in them, these types of pepper may trigger severe digestive issues. If you suspect that your dog accidentally ate spicy peppers, observe him for nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, and/or dehydration.

On the other hand, you can safely feed your dog red, yellow, orange, or green bell peppers. Bell peppers are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, and they can help him fight illnesses, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and ease digestive discomfort (as long as he is not sensitive to nightshade food). The best bell peppers for him to consume are red ones because they contain higher amounts of carotenoid phytonutrients, beta carotene, and vitamins.

How to feed peppers to your dog: Wash the bell pepper properly. Slice it into smaller sections while taking out the stem, seeds, and core. Serve raw or lightly cooked to retain its crunchy consistency and sweet taste. Do not cook it with any seasonings that may be poisonous to him, such as salt, garlic, or onions.

Here are three ideas for pepper-based treats your dog will love:

  1. Create dehydrated red bell peppers for your pooch to snack on.
  2. Chop and mix in a few slices of bell peppers in his next meal.
  3. Surprise him with red bell pepper dog treats!

In summary: Your dog can enjoy certain varieties of pepper, but before letting him try them, be a responsible paw parent by checking if they are suitable for him. Though bell peppers are generally safe for dog consumption, dogs with arthritis or inflammatory joint stiffness will not benefit from eating them. The alkaloid compound solanine could further aggravate his illness.
